Donald Wolsey, CPA, CA, CFP

“My goal is to help physicians make confident financial decisions at every stage of their careers, while minimizing tax and protecting the wealth they have worked so hard to build.”

Practical advice for physicians

Don is a senior partner at FWH with more than 30 years of public accounting experience. His practice focuses on accounting, tax planning, and estate planning, with a particular emphasis on helping physicians and their families organize their financial affairs in a practical, proactive, and tax-efficient way. He brings a thoughtful, long-term perspective to his work and is known for explaining complex matters in plain language so clients can make confident decisions.

Supporting physicians at every career stage

Don works almost exclusively with physicians, from residency through retirement. He understands the key financial decisions that arise as their medical career progresses, including incorporation, compensation planning, saving and investing through a professional corporation, retirement planning, and transferring wealth to the next generation. His approach is to help clients see the bigger picture and make decisions that fit both their professional goals and family priorities.

Accounting, tax, and estate planning

Don helps clients look beyond annual compliance and focus on planning that supports long-term financial security. His advice is designed to reduce income taxes, preserve family wealth, and make complex accounting, tax, and estate planning matters easier to understand as circumstances change.

Coordinating the right advice

Most of Don’s clients look to him as a trusted quarterback for their financial lives. He regularly works alongside a client’s financial advisor, banker, lawyer, and other professionals to help ensure that accounting, tax, investment, retirement, and estate planning advice is aligned. This collaborative approach helps clients avoid fragmented advice and gives them a clearer path forward and peace of mind.

Family and community

Outside of work, Don is a devoted husband and proud father of two teenaged daughters. Family is an important part of his life and helps shape the practical, grounded perspective he brings to clients who are also balancing demanding professional lives with personal and family priorities.

David Hall, CPA, CA

(902) 444-4044 x108

“New doctors have a lot on their plate, but worrying about taxes doesn’t have to be one of them. We help physicians reduce income tax and build wealth, while paying off student debts.”

Laying the foundation for a financially secure future

David works primarily with new doctors that have just completed their residencies to help set up their corporate structure in the most efficient way. This allows doctors to reduce their income taxes and build wealth, while paying off student debts. David provides accounting and income tax advice in a clear and understandable fashion and has over 20 years of experience in public accounting.

Working with new physicians

Some common issues David’s clients face are:

  • repaying student debt while trying to accumulate wealth
  • budgeting for income taxes
  • knowing what records to keep and how to best manage them

Custom solutions for your unique situation

First and foremost, David will help you structure your practice appropriately to put you in the best position for achieving your financial goals. He will take the time to discuss all of the available options, including remaining unincorporated, incorporating and setting up a holding company or family trust.  If incorporated, David will help develop an appropriate compensation strategy and show you how to pay yourself by way of a salary and/or dividends.

To help you repay student debt and begin to accumulate wealth, David will work with your financial advisor and show you the tax implications of debt repayment and accumulating wealth inside of your corporation.

He will also provide you with pertinent information such as when income taxes are due, how much will need to be paid and how to budget for those payments. David will also identify how much money you will have for personal spending, savings and debt repayment.

Simplifying record keeping

David will help setup a record keeping process that gives FWH the information we need to do your accounting and income taxes, while allowing you to minimize the time you spend working on records.

A focus on family

Originally from Gander, Newfoundland, David and his wife have two young sons. In his spare time, David enjoys spending time with his family, motorcycling, golf and taekwon-do.

Laying the foundation for a financially secure future

Christa specializes in working with new doctors and health care practitioners that have recently started their practice as well as those who have been practicing for a number of years. She walks those clients new to practice through an analysis to determine if and when incorporating is right for them.

Starting a practice and repaying student debt can be stressful. “You take care of everyone else, let FWH take care of you.”

Working with doctors and health care professionals

Some common issues Christa’s clients face are:

  • repaying student debt while trying to accumulate wealth
  • budgeting for income taxes
  • knowing what records to keep and how to best manage them
  • financing the purchase of a practice
  • determining the most tax efficient mix of compensation (salary, dividend, other options)
  • whether to invest corporately or personally because of the corporate passive income rules

Custom solutions for your unique situation

First and foremost, Christa will help you structure your practice appropriately to put you in the best position for achieving your financial goals. She will take the time to discuss all of the available options, including remaining unincorporatedincorporating your practice and/or setting up a holding company or family trust.  If incorporated, Christa will help develop an appropriate compensation strategy and show you how to pay yourself by way of a salary and/or dividends.

Saving for your future while paying down debt can seem daunting. Christa will work with your financial advisory team and show you the tax implications of debt repayment and accumulating wealth inside of your corporation.

What about your existing advisors?

Having an accountant who does more that just prepare your tax return for you is important. It is also important to have a team of advisors who are proactive and enjoy working together with your goals and best interests at heart. Christa will work with your banking, investing and legal advisors to ensure that everyone is on the same page. If you don’t have a team of advisors in place, Christa can recommend advisors that have experience dealing with physicians, dentists and health care practitioners.

Record keeping tailored for you

Christa will help create a record keeping process that works for you. She has customizable templates that can be provided if you enjoy record keeping. If you would rather be hands off, we have a cloud accounting solution that reduces the amount of information clients need to provide at the end of the year. A focus on family and work-life balance

Christa grew up in rural Nova Scotia and now lives in Halifax with her husband and their two young daughters. Christa gives back to her community by volunteering at her children’s school. Christa enjoys spending quality time with her family, curling, and being active outdoors.

Nick Hodgson, CPA, CA

(902) 444-4044 x138

“We understand that tax may not be your specialty, but it is ours.  Let us handle your tax planning and compliance to make sure the only surprises you get this year are on your birthday, not at tax time.”

A focus on client service

Nick understands that you have a busy life, both personally and professionally, so your free time is better spent doing the things you enjoy rather than dealing with taxes.  He aims to make the annual process as stress free as possible by supporting you every step of the way. You can expect:

  • To know when your tax payments and filings are due;
  • To receive checklists to keep your personal and/or corporate tax information organized;
  • Simplified record keeping;
  • A hassle-free process in the event of a review by the Canada Revenue Agency;
  • Prompt replies to any questions you may have throughout the year; and,
  • Advice delivered in a way that’s easy to understand.

Helping you accumulate wealth

One of Nick’s main goals is to help clients accumulate wealth by minimizing their taxes.  With over 10 years of practice in tax, he has an in-depth understanding of the various tax planning tools available, which allows him to use the right tool at the right time for each client depending on their personal circumstances and objectives.

Some of the most common tax planning tools used for Nick’s clients include:

  • Incorporation
  • Timely contributions to registered investment accounts (RRSPs, TFSAs, FHSAs and RESPs)
  • Tailored compensation plans
  • Tax efficient corporate investments
  • Passive income planning
  • Income splitting with family members

Nick is also able to help his clients protect their wealth by tailoring their corporate structure.   While a holding company and trust may not be necessary for everyone, they are additional tools that his clients can consider to mitigate the risk of their savings being exposed to claims by personal or professional creditors.

Early career physicians

Reaching the end of residency comes with a big change to your finances and often multiple demands on your newfound income.  This may include repayment of student debt, saving for a home or retirement, and changing lifestyle.   Nick will work with you to plan for each of these demands as well as budget for taxes.  He’ll also prepare an individualized analysis to determine if/when incorporation may be beneficial to minimize your tax burden.

A devoted dad

In his spare time, Nick enjoys spending quality time with his family, exercising, and playing hockey.
